I wanted a knife for cutting meat and this deba works very well. The surprising weight of the steel makes it easier to use. I use the back edge of the knife to smash garlic cloves. Then they peel easily.

I purchased this hatchet as a test to verify this website before purchasing a more expensive piece from them as I have been scammed shopping overseas before. Im happy to say the quality of Honmamon speaks to the authentic Japanese craftsmanship and that my order was promptly shipped from Japan. An initial inspection of this hatchet shows a well made sturdy tool and has the character of a handmade piece as they claim, not stamped out in a factory by the hundreds. Shop with them in confidence! I plan to come back to purchase one of their more expensive hunting knives and probably more in the future.

Amazing weight and balance, blade is very sharp; not too sharp to chip. Steel is thick, very well tapered and gives a good heft and follow through on the cutting stroke. Handle is well formed and sound, blade is riveted and collared very securely. I rotated the leather retaining strap 180 degrees to allow it to be unsnapped with the thumb when held securely in the right hand, this is easy to do as the retaining strap is secured by one rivet it can pivot around. I was originally concerned about the size and form of the wooden sheath; it is very secure and comfortable to wear. My only wish would be the availability of a full tang version, however this design is centuries old, I am sure it will preform exceptionally.

I am not satisfied with the quality of workmanship, because there are a lot of sharp burrs on the metal part of the handle, which should not be the case with a kitchen knife.

Great control. It is the easiest drawknife that I own to archive a wonderful edge. Not too cumbersome, and with a nice size for most uses. Beautiful made.
