Need Setting Up Katsura before to use
About the Katsura (Ferrule) on Japanese Chisels
Japanese chisels have a steel ring called a katsura on the end of the wooden handle.
Before using the chisel for the first time, the katsura needs to be prepared.
This helps prevent the handle from cracking and makes the tool safer and longer‑lasting.
Before using a chisel, lower the ferrule attached to the end of the handle slightly below the handle, then tap the end of the handle with a hammer to widen it, being careful not to hit the ferrule itself.

That's where this downward-facing ring striker comes in handy. Its inner surface cone-shaped, and when you place it over the handle and strike straight, without striking the handle, force is applied to the surrounding descending wheel, allowing only the descending wheel to move down easily.

For chisels 4 bu (≈12 mm) and larger, place a piece of soft wood underneath, stand the chisel upright on it, place the hoop‑setting tool over the handle, and strike downward. Do not hit hard all at once—tap gradually while checking the progress.

For chisels 3 bu (≈9 mm) and smaller, do not place wood underneath. Hold the chisel in the air, align the hoop‑setting tool straight with the handle, and tap gently. Narrow and thin chisels may bend from the thinner neck section, so proceed carefully.

When using a narrow, thin chisel, be careful as it may bend at the thin part of the shaft.
