The color of the steel may vary slightly due to residue from the heat treatment process. In this process, which involves immersing the axe in water, lead is melted, and the temperature is raised to 800 degrees. To prevent lead from remaining on the surface of the axe, a mud mixture is applied beforehand. The specific composition of the mud mixture may vary among blacksmiths. As the axe cools, the mud will peel off, leaving a unique color on the steel. While the preferred method in Japan is to quench the steel in water for maximum hardness, oil quenching can also result in a beautiful color.
