Tosa where is the Center of Hatchet Production in Japan.

One of the highest-grade hatchets with case manufactured carefully
by a Tosa smith who is working sincerely and steadily with the traditional smith techniques succeeded.

It is a "REAL" hatchet, with the edge of the blade
made of that famous high carbon steel "Shirogami Steel".
It is produced by hammer one by one, quite different from ones made of patted clad materials.
It is extremely sharp and sharpness last longer.
However, it gets rust easily, so it needs maintenance.

What is kurouchi knife?

Kurouchi knives retain the scaly residue left from the forging process, meaning that the residue works as coating on the carbon steel to prevent from rust.

The finish of Kurouchi reduces reactivity on carbon steel knives, and give the knife a very characterful, rustic aesthetic prized by many knife enthusiasts.

Kurouchi finishes varying widely in appearance, uniformity, and durability. Rarely do pictures do these finishes justice as they have a very complex look and feel to them.

Of course, you need to sharpen the edge every time after using it even if the Kurouchi coating works for the sides of blade.

Phenomenal design, materials and craftsmanship. Worth twice the price.

Amazing weight and balance, blade is very sharp; not too sharp to chip. Steel is thick, very well tapered and gives a good heft and follow through on the cutting stroke. Handle is well formed and sound, blade is riveted and collared very securely. I rotated the leather retaining strap 180 degrees to allow it to be unsnapped with the thumb when held securely in the right hand, this is easy to do as the retaining strap is secured by one rivet it can pivot around. I was originally concerned about the size and form of the wooden sheath; it is very secure and comfortable to wear. My only wish would be the availability of a full tang version, however this design is centuries old, I am sure it will preform exceptionally.

Works really well when cutting roots in the ground and branches on trees.
