Saws are broadly divided into two types: "rip saws," which cut along the grain of the wood, and "crosscut saws,"
which cut perpendicular to the grain.
A saw with teeth on both sides for both rip cuts and crosscuts is called a double-edged saw.
It was called that and began to be used around 1897 (Meiji 30).
