What is a whetstone?

A whetstone is a tool used to sharpen or polish for metals and rocks.

Natural whetstones

Natural whetstones are made from stones collected from the natural environment. This allows us to produce blades with a sharpness and beauty that cannot be replicated by artificial whetstones.
However, you need to be careful to judge the quality of natural whetstones and whether they are suitable for your purposes.

Artificial whetstone

whetstones are the most common and widely used whetstones.
We have a wide variety of whetstones and grits available , including rough whetstones, medium whetstones, finishing stones, and super finishing stones, so you can use them to maintain a variety of blades.


Rough Whetstone

The grit size is #2000 to #6000 .
This whetstone further refines the blade that has been conditioned with a medium whetstone .
It is also used for the final finishing, making the blade even sharper.
If there are no chips in the blade, simply use a finishing whetstone after daily use to further strengthen the blade edge.

Medium Whetstone
Medium Whetstone

The grit size is #800 to #1500 .
It is used for general resharpening and is the standard whetstone for sharpening to a sharp blade.
For home use, a medium whetstone alone will be enough to sharpen the blade. If you are concerned about sharpness, you will need to finish it with a finishing whetstone.

Finishing Whetstone

The grit size is #2000 to #6000 .
This whetstone further refines the blade that has been conditioned with a medium whetstone.

Diamond Whetstone

Diamond whetstones are made of diamond particles that are hard and resistant to wear. Extremely high abrasive power. It can be used for sharpening hard blades and on the surface of whetstones.
Diamond whetstones are classified into two types according to their manufacturing method: " electroplated " and " sintered ."

Explanation

A grindstone with diamond particles fixed to the metal surface by plating.

A grinding stone made by combining diamond particles with a binder and sintering them under high temperature and pressure.

Good

・The particles stick sharply to the blade, providing a high abrasive power.
・Most of them are relatively inexpensive.

Compared to electroplating, the scratches are shallow and can be easily removed.
It can be used for a long time.

Bad

Diamond particles are simply attached using a plating process, so they don't last very long.

・Abrasive power is slightly weaker than electroplated type.
・Most are expensive.
・Needs to be resurfaced due to clogging.

Sickle whetstones and curved whetstones are ideal for sharpening tools with curved blades, such as sickles and scissors .
