This pair of traditional Nigiri-basami scissors is carefully handcrafted one by one by a skilled scissor craftsman from Banshu, Hyogo—an area renowned for its cutlery production.

The long-blade Kansai style is favored mainly in western Japan. Compared to the claw-shaped (Higashi) style, it features longer blades and a shorter grip section, offering a distinct cutting feel.

This model uses premium Blue Paper Steel (Aogami). To fully bring out the quality of the steel, each blade is meticulously sharpened by hand while being cooled with water. Because the tips of nigiri scissors are extremely thin, they are sensitive to friction heat during sharpening, which can reduce hardness and performance. Cooling with water minimizes heat buildup and helps preserve the steel’s natural sharpness.

As the sharpening approaches the blade tip, the craftsman adjusts pressure with great care, ensuring the edge achieves its optimal cutting performance. The back side of the blade is also finely finished, with the sharpening marks aligned all the way to the tip. This produces a clean, precise cut, even on fabric edges and stray threads.

The spring-like grip section is forged and hammered individually, creating the characteristic supple resilience of high‑quality nigiri scissors. Through careful sharpening and precise adjustment of the grip, the blades glide smoothly against each other, resulting in a light, effortless opening and closing motion.

• As each piece is handmade, slight variations may occur.

• After use, wipe off dust, thread fibers, sweat, and oils with a dry cloth. Then apply a light coat of camellia oil (or similar) before storage to prevent rust.
