Features
This pair of traditional Nigiri-basami scissors is carefully handcrafted one by one by a skilled scissor craftsman from Banshu, Hyogo—an area renowned for its cutlery production.
The claw‑shaped Kanto style is mainly preferred in eastern Japan. Compared to the long‑blade Kansai style, it features shorter blades and a longer grip, giving it a distinct cutting feel.

During finishing and adjustment, the blades are sharpened while being cooled with water. Because the tips of nigiri scissors are extremely thin, they are highly sensitive to friction heat generated during sharpening, which can reduce the steel’s natural hardness and performance. Cooling with water helps suppress heat buildup and protects the steel from thermal damage.
As the sharpening approaches the blade tip, the craftsman carefully adjusts pressure to bring out the steel’s inherent sharpness. The back side of the blade is also finely finished, with the sharpening marks aligned all the way to the tip. This results in a clean, precise cut, even on fabric edges and stray threads.
The spring-like grip section is individually hammered and forged, creating the characteristic supple resilience of high‑quality nigiri scissors. Through meticulous sharpening and precise adjustment of the grip, the blades glide smoothly against each other, producing a light, effortless opening and closing motion.

Thanks to the chamfering applied from the blade tip along the spine (mune), the tip is made slimmer, making this pair of scissors more suitable for detailed and delicate work compared to the standard claw‑shaped Kanto style.
The softened edges also prevent the corners from pressing against your fingers or palm when gripping the scissors, reducing discomfort during extended use.
Visually, the refined and tapered profile gives the scissors a cleaner, more elegant appearance, resulting in an overall impression that is both gentle and beautifully balanced.
With excellent usability and refined craftsmanship, these scissors are ideal not only for personal use but also as a thoughtful gift.
Notes
-
As each piece is handmade, slight variations may occur.
-
After use, wipe off dust, thread fibers, sweat, and oils with a dry cloth. Then apply a light coat of camellia oil (or similar) before storage to prevent rust.
-
During use, the blade alignment may occasionally reverse. This is not a defect. If this occurs, please contact us and we will adjust it for you.
